I’m not sure exactly why I stopped listening to music, but I can very easily say when. Like it’s frozen in amber, my music collection just stops around 2012. I can even see the last album I bought: Tramp, by Sharon Van Etten, which I listened to over and over again, but then instead of moving on to new music I just moved on to no music at all. I became more engaged in politics. I started listening to podcasts about politics, and then podcasts about everything else. Now I listen to podcasts an average of six or seven hours every day, receive my music in the interstitial segments between ads for Blue Apron, Casper mattresses and SimpliSafe home security systems. Frequently I find myself overcome with despair.
