We Can’t See the Elephants Today

The zoo can be a depressing place. You’d think it would be a diversion, all those animals, but it’s not. It’s the opposite of that. Whatever the opposite of a diversion is, that’s the zoo. When I pick Linus up from his mother’s, this is where he says he wants to go. No, at first he says he’d like to visit the tombs of the pharaohs when I ask what he’d like to do today while I’m buckling him into his booster seat,  “anything at all,” I say, and he says the tombs of the pharaohs and when I say I don’t think we have time for that then he says he’ll settle for the zoo. “Settle,” he says, like we’re in a court of law.
