A Haunting

It hadn’t even occurred to me until my dad pointed out what the coffee shop I’d suggested we meet used to be. Of course it looked completely different. It was now the kind of coffee shop you find in downtown Portland or Los Angeles or San Francisco, very white, very clean, with an open floor plan and an entire wall display just to sell one single pour-over water kettle. It did not seem like a viable business plan for this kind of coffee shop to exist in a town like Mount Shasta because it wasn’t. In fact both the coffee shop and the boutique hotel above it were purchased, renovated and reopened by Bethel, a large megachurch in the neo-charismatic movement based out of nearby Redding.
