“There was no criminal charge against him. He was not a fugitive. He had never been arrested. There was no warrant of arrest for him. He was not an escaped criminal. He was riding in a car which was speeding, perhaps. He was riding in an automobile which had the muffler open.” So begins a front page article in The Fresno Bee on Monday, May 7, 1928, describing the circumstances wherein two policemen, Constable Alvin Cole and Special Deputy Sheriff Ira Chalmers, opened fire on an automobile early the previous morning, killing one man.
